A convention of... DEATH! July 6, 2010 Posted by Mookie
An original, exclusive picture of Bort is still up for auction at the WEBCOMICS AUCTION FOR THE GULF. You have until next week to bid on it or any of the other fantastic pieces of art in this great charity event.

This weekend I'll be at the legendary and epic CONNECTICON! If you've been reading these news posts over the last eight years you'll know that ConnectiCon is my favorite convention to attend. Period. I've been attending and involved with this convention since its maiden voyage and I won't stop going until they lock me out.

I'm proud to be hosting the second annual Cosplay Death Match this year, too! I filmed a promo for it yesterday and should have a link to the finished video sometime before the end of the week. There are even some openings for contestants available, so sign up if you want to live or die by the whim of a bloodthirsty crowd!

This year I will not be hosting the Cosplay Chess Game. This is my own decision and will be proudly "passing the torch" of hosting this event to Rosscott. If you're going to be at ConnectiCon this weekend, please show him the same amount of love you've shown me on that stage.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
Ankst. July 5, 2010 Posted by Mookie
I drew today's comic while sitting on the Esplanade in Boston yesterday. It was my attempt to continue an old Fourth of July holiday tradition where my friends gather on the shore of the Charles River and relax all day long until the fireworks light up the night sky.

I was the only one of my friends there this year. Still, I got some sun, got some work done (as much as was possible in the blistering heat) and made some new friends who were not only nice enough to keep me company but made sure I was nice and hydrated as well. Thanks John, Cindy, George, Francine, Alonzo and little Isabella.

I'm pleased to announce that the auctions begin today for the WEBCOMICS AUCTION FOR THE GULF. Keep an eye on it today if you're interested in bidding on an original piece of artwork from me, drawn especially for the auction. There are lots of other fantastic webcomickers involved in this charity event and I'm so happy to be a part of it.

That's all from me for now.

The odd levels are the most boring. July 2, 2010 Posted by Mookie
Over the last few years I've traditionally made this date a filler day, but not this year. Still, if you'll all indulge me for a second while I "level up."

It's my birthday today.
Happy birthday to me!
Today I hit level 31.

...oh god. I'm in my thirties. That's plural now!

Stunt looking at his female boss and thinking "criminals" is my favorite panel in today's comic. Originally I had him looking at the assembled poachers, but the symbolism of him looking at a woman (who's his superior) and thinking that was just too powerful a character moment for me to pass up. Plus, all the people who are convinced I'm a woman-hating chauvinist will have a field day with it. Tee hee.

In other news, mine will be among the first round of artwork put up for auction for the WEBCOMICS AUCTION FOR THE GULF on Monday. I hope you folks like what you see and, if you choose to bid on it, all the proceeds will be going to a good cause.

If you want to donate directly to charities that are helping with the Gulf Oil Spill, or even get involved yourself, here are some other resources:

Huffington Post compilation of organizations and charities.

Matter of Trust.

Greater New Orleans Foundation.

Better Business Bureau compilation of approved charities.

I do sincerely hope that helps.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on and have a nice weekend!
It wasn't rain after all. July 1, 2010 Posted by Mookie
I admit this is a ridiculous strip. As I was drawing it I kept saying to myself, "This is so freaking silly." But that's the beauty of the Wild Edge for me. It's a land so infused with chaos that literally any idea is possible, no matter how ridiculous or silly.

I guess that wasn't rain after all, though.

Originally Bort's big, bulbous eye was never meant to be expressive at all, but when you've got a character that never talks the eyes become very important. So necessity drove me to change his eye today. The joke never would've worked if it'd remained fixed and emotionless.

I picked up a few comic books yesterday. Here's my quick thoughts on them.

- I am absolutely done with Justice Society of America. I haven't really enjoyed either team of the JSA since the new writing team took over so I'm just going to save my money from now on.

- When did the Red Lantern Corps in Green Lantern get so bloody interesting? No pun intended. Dex-Starr's origin totally tugged on my heartstrings.

- I'm curious to see where Action Comics is going now that it's spotlighting Lex Luthor. This month was a good start.

- Every single issue of Atomic Robo cracks me up. This month's offering is no different. I love Undead Edison.

- I think I'm the only one on the internet who doesn't think that Wonder Woman's new outfit is all that bad.

- Deadpool's shriveled, puny soul is adorable.

That's all from me for now.

Bluugh. Again. June 30, 2010 Posted by Mookie
Once again there's only a little bit of news to report today, as the heat continues to make things uncomfortable and sluggish here at Mookie HQ.

I completed and sent off an original Wild Edge piece for the Webcomics Auction for the Gulf Coast. I do hope you folks like it once it goes up for auction.

I still plan on donating money out of my own pocket to another charity benefiting the Gulf Coast. I know I said I was going to compile a list of charities for you folks last week, but I am a scatterbrained knucklehead and it slipped my mind. I'll do it this week.

Also... what the hell happened to June? It's over already?!

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
Bluugh. June 29, 2010 Posted by Mookie
I literally have nothing of interest to say today down here in the news box.

Unless you consider it being so uncomfortably hot here in my apartment that I'm surprised I was able to get today's comic done without smearing ink all over the place an interesting bit of news.

It's not so much "interesting" as it is "bluugh."

That's all from me for now.
Port of call. June 28, 2010 Posted by Mookie
PortCon Maine was, as always, a blast. I love Portland and the people who both run and attend this lovely convention. I'm always flattered that they ask me to return and, even though I didn't spend Friday night in a dress, I hope they ask me to return next year because I would gladly do so.

I managed to get today's comic done while at the convention. I do hope you folks like it.

Many thanks to the readers who came to visit me at my table and at my panels. Many thanks to all the old friends I got to hang out with over the weekend. Many thanks to PortCon for being such an awesome convention.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on!
I love Portland. That is all. June 25, 2010 Posted by Mookie
I'm at PortCon Maine today! Come by and say "hi" if you're in the area, as I'll be in a terrific mood. I love going to Maine and that general "happiness of being" tends to spread when I'm at PortCon.

The comic ought to resume normally on Monday. I'll let you folks know otherwise, and if there's surprise Monday filler I apologize ahead of time for it.

That's all from me for now.
See you at PortCon Maine!
Throwing news around like a monster throwing a mongrelman. June 23, 2010 Posted by Mookie
You might say that was quite a stunt Bort pulled.
Tee hee.

Anyhow, there's not much news to report today besides my aforementioned appearance at PortCon Maine this weekend, my new examples of amateur photography and my participation in WEBCOMICS AUCTION FOR THE GULF (even though Carly hasn't listed my name yet).

Oh. There is one thing. I have fallen behind in sending out book orders since the beginning of the month. I don't have any excuses for this besides my own notoriously scattered brain. All book orders will be sent out before I leave for PortCon Maine this weekend. Sorry for the delay.

That's all from me for now.

Delivering news more effectively than Bort. June 22, 2010 Posted by Mookie
Just a couple of new quickies today to keep you folks informed about things involving me.

This weekend I'll be returning to PortCon Maine to cause more trouble and say "hello" to folks who come out to see me. I always enjoy this delightful little show, if for no other reason than I will have spent at least one night in a dress.

I've also posted a couple of new examples of my amateur photography. It was my first time working with a new model and it was a great learning experience. Check them out if you like. I think they're neat, but I'm biased.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
It's wild, man! WILD! June 21, 2010 Posted by Mookie
And so the week-long "interlude" of Miranda's continuing investigation into the mystery of the Beast draws to a close and we come upon the next tale... Escape from the Wild Edge. I hope you folks are as excited as I am to see Bort again.

The new Donation Wallpaper is up for your perusal and approval. I hope you like it.

Last week I said I was going to donate all of the money raised from the donation wallpaper to a charity dedicated to helping those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. My own research, combined with the suggestions you fine folks e-mailed to me, turned up an almost overwhelming number of charities. I found one, however, that made me change my plan entirely.

Instead of spearheading a fund-raiser of my own I've decided to get in contact with the talented Carly Monardo, who will hopefully accept a donation of original artwork from me for her WEBCOMICS AUCTION FOR THE GULF. Many thanks to the flu-addled reader who brought this to my attention.

Later on this week I'll compile a list of the other charities and organizations that I checked out so folks can donate to them directly. Besides helping out the auction mentioned above, I still plan to make a donation out of my own pocket to one of those various charities.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
Aaaand we're back. June 18, 2010 Posted by Mookie
The site was down for a little while today, but things seem to be back up and running now. Yay!

Thanks to all of you who have been notifying me of charities and organizations dedicated to helping out in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. You folks are the best.

Other than that, enjoy your weekend!
Outrage covered in oil. June 17, 2010 Posted by Mookie
I'm going to get serious here today.

The disaster in the Gulf of Mexico makes me sick. This is an environmental catastrophe and I'm sad to see it happening in my lifetime. My heart breaks every time I see a photograph of an animal coated in that oil.

I want to help. Some of you have e-mailed me and told me you want to help, too.

This week I'll be looking into various charities and organizations that are dedicated to helping those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and next week I plan to dedicate every single dollar from the Donation Wallpaper to the organization of my choice, in addition to money out of my own pocket. If anyone has any suggestions for organizations or charities, please e-mail me and let me know.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
[text missing]... but in a funny way. June 15, 2010 Posted by Mookie
Miranda's dimensional visitors are more fun for me to draw than they ought to be. Wheeheeheehee!

My girlfr... I'm sorry, my fiancée is on a new work schedule nowadays so every other weekend she has Friday off. This past Friday was one of those occasions so, naturally, I didn't go near my computer for three days (except to play video games with her).

Anyway, I just got caught up reading my e-mails yesterday and discovered that many of you want me to post the "full written review" of FACEBATH from last Friday's comic. Normally I wouldn't have a problem doing that, except that I didn't actually write a "full review." I made sure there was enough to get the point across in the important spots where text was visible. In the other spots there are FACEBATH-shaped holes like a cartoon character had just run through a wall. I can post that if it would amuse you folks.

I do live to amuse my readers, after all.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on.
How about a quickie...? June 14, 2010 Posted by Mookie
Just a couple of quick little news tidbits today.

- Happy birthday to my younger brother, John. He levels up today but doesn't get any new powers. Everyone knows those are for even-numbered levels only.

- This week is yet another "interlude" which addresses the ongoing mystery of The Beast. I had such a good time with Miranda's planar escapade last time that I wanted to do it again. Hope you folks enjoy this brief little ride.

- THE WAR IN HELL: Dominic Deegan Vol. 5 is on sale now!

Told you things were going to be brief today.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on!
