More of an errata than a news post. January 25, 2013 Posted by Mookie
Today's news post is essentially "stuff I forgot to mention in yesterday's news post" because I am notoriously forgetful.

Professional wrestling's influence on the comic is... well, the character of Rachel Hart. She has outlandish costumes, her last name is taken from Bret "The Hitman" Hart, she has her own finishing move, and she arguably had a one-time tag team partner. I honestly can't believe I forgot to mention Rachel during yesterday's pro-wrestling rant. I guess I was too focused on shirtless Dominic.

- My good friend Xero Reynolds has made a symphonic metal cover of some Chrono Trigger themes! I've never played the Chrono Trigger games myself, but I know good metal when I hear it. Give his work a listen! You won't be disappointed.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on, and have a nice weekend!
And now for something completely different. January 24, 2013 Posted by Mookie
Today's news post has nothing to do with today's comic, but it's a subject that's been rattling around in my head for a while now.

Professional wrestling.

I love professional wrestling. When done well it's the perfect marriage of athleticism and storytelling. The reason so many male protagonists in this comic run around without their shirts on is likely because of professional wrestling's impact on me.

I grew up watching the icons of the 1980s like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Ricky Steamboat, and so on. I got back into it during the "Monday Night Wars" of the late 1990s, when Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Mick Foley were my new pro-wrestling heroes. I tried getting back into professional wrestling again recently and found myself very disappointed. It's all so corporate and sterile (save for the incredible CM Punk) that I was almost about to give up hope.

Until I looked to the independent wrestling scene. In particular, I discovered CHIKARA. This is a small promotion with a lot of heart and personality. Just looking over their roster will tell you that. It's also funny as hell. The eight-man tag-team match from their 2012 King of Trios Tournament has to be seen to be believed. If you're a professional wrestling fan and want the whole thing to be fun again, give Chikara a look-see. You won't be disappointed.

The Art of Wrestling Podcast has also been entertaining me greatly. It's hosted by Colt Cabana, who took part in that amazing 8-man tag match mentioned above. Give it a look-see... er, listen-see. You won't be disappointed.

That's all from me for now.

De-blighted. January 23, 2013 Posted by Mookie
The last time Jacob pulled the Blight out of anyone, it was Gregory... and the process very nearly killed him.

The same would've happened to these ailing priests had Jacob not taken the Blight into himself, much like Adrak would take the injuries of others into himself.

I've posted some more photographs into my deviantArt gallery! There are a few more photos of the lovely Porcelain Dalya, as well as another Boston-based burlesque performer by the name of Maggie Maraschino! Like Dalya, Maggie was a real pleasure to work with and she really shines in front of a camera. I hope I did these lovely ladies justice, and I hope you folks like what you see.

That's all from me for now.

Uplifting? January 21, 2013 Posted by Mookie
After so many days of listening to doom and gloom music while working on comics, it was nice to break out something a little more uplifting. I could have gone with the more melodic and symphonic heavy metal, like Sonata Arctica or Kamelot, but I felt the more triumphant and orchestral stuff should be for white mages and other healers. So I went with Dimmu Borgir, in particular their latest album Abrahadabra. I found it fitting, given the transformative themes of the music and the band in general. That, and I think "Gateways" is a good song.

Behemoth was considered, but I tend to save them for anything involving the Infernomancer.

I had the pleasure to photograph another wonderful and charming model over the weekend. My 2013 resolution to get back into my amateur photography has been a success so far! I'll have photos to show later this week, and I do hope you like them.

That's all from me for now.

Blightmare. January 18, 2013 Posted by Mookie
Looks like Jacob isn't the only one having problems with the Blight. Well, the Luanians and the House Danovich werewolves were having problems with the Blight before, but now they're even worse.

And yes, "Blackened" by Metallica was playing in my head for this comic, too.

That, and "Death in the Eyes of Dawn" by Enslaved because their new album, RIITIIR, is so freaking good. I've talked about this album a bunch already but I'm going to do so again. It's one of those rare metal albums that I can listen to, front-to-back, over and over, without getting tired of it or feeling I need to skip a song. It's just... oh man, it's such a good album.

Other metal albums (that I own) that are great all the way through are:
- "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon
- "From Mars To Sirius" by Gojira
- "And Justice for All" by Metallica
- "Axioma Ethica Odini" by Enslaved

That's all from me for now.
Rock on, and have a nice weekend!
Mountain man. January 17, 2013 Posted by Mookie
It's been a long time since we've seen Reinholdt atop that mountain, being told he was the first knight of Maltak. And it's been a long time since that mountain vanished. Looks like it reappeared just in time.

And I wonder who that could be behind them?

I added the first batch of new photos to my deviantArt gallery of photographs! I worked with the lovely Porcelain Dalya (I love that name) for the first time and she was an absolute joy to work with. We took a multitude of amazing photos, so many that I'm having trouble deciding which ones I like better than others. The first bunch is up, but there are many more on the way. I hope you like what you see.

And last but certainly not least, I made a cameo appearance in the new Star Cross'd Destiny! Blair has always been super nice to me, and her depiction of me is also very nice.

That's all from me for now.

A-bomb-inable. January 15, 2013 Posted by Mookie
Got to break out the puns every now and again.

Fireball is one of those classic spells, both for Luna and in the fantasy genre. Every so often Luna breaks it out, whether it's a recent conflict or one of her earliest appearances. She even modifies her fireball spell every so often.

Today I'm photographing someone I've never worked with before, so I'm nervous as usual. But the last few occasions I've worked with new models have produced some great photos (in my biased opinion), so here's hoping my lucky streak continues. Mostly for the young lady I'm working with today. I'd hate to waste her time.

That's all from me for now.

Necromoprhosis. January 14, 2013 Posted by Mookie
It's a been a long time since Jacob made his necromantic debut, and he's gone through quite a few significant changes since then. Let's see where his journey will finally take him.

This weekend I met with King David Johann himself, and His Majesty was very pleased with his current successes around here.

I visited my best friend in the world, upon whom King David Johann is loosely based, and met his baby daughter for the first time. It was really sweet to watch the guy I've been friends with since middle school be a dad. Watching him sing his version of "The Wheels on the Bus..." with added Star Wars references was an added bonus.

That's all from me for now.

Blackened is the end. January 11, 2013 Posted by Mookie
If there was any doubt before, there's little debate now. The "soundtrack" for today's comic is definitely "Blackened" by Metallica.

Is Jacob right? Is the Blight really warped white magic that's been appropriated by necromancers over the centuries? He better hope he's right, or else the soundtrack to Monday's comic will be "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.

Photography and astronomy were two hobbies of mine I resolved to pay more attention to in 2013. I've made good on my resolution with the former already, scheduling photo-shoots with new models in the upcoming weeks. I've worked regularly with my friend and ever-ready model Tarah over the years, but it's time to move out of my comfort zone and try new things. It's the best way to grow creatively, even if it can be a little scary.

Getting out of my comfort zone was the goal of my upcoming webcomic project. For ten years I've been calling the shots with this comic. Now, after a decade, to enter into a collaboration where my ideas are challenged, changed, and ultimately become something new is both intimidating and exhilarating.

That's all from me for now.

A blighted dilemma. January 10, 2013 Posted by Mookie
I often have "soundtracks" for certain comics when I'm working on them. Between yesterday's comic and today's update, I couldn't decide which of the following two songs were most appropriate.

"Mr. Crowley" by Ozzy Osbourne
"Blackened" by Metallica

It was a very pleasing dilemma, as I treated myself to some quality music while I was working on Jacob's necromantic struggle.

Also, after awhile I may have started singing "Mr. Mugsy" to the tune of "Mr. Crowley." Because we have a cat named Mugsy. And whenever he'd walk into the room during that song I'd start singing to him because it rhymed. Also, after awhile I realized I may spend far too much time alone.

Finally, I know it's somewhat silly for Jacob's clothes to disintegrate first as he absorbs the empowered Blight, but I thought 1) it better showcases how completely the Blight is overtaking him and 2) it looks dramatic.

That's all from me for now.

Notes. January 8, 2013 Posted by Mookie
A couple of notes about today's comic:

The last time we saw Adrak Bulgak he was watching over a field where a new plant had begun to grow. Now, in a place where regrowth had been difficult, the life that his brother's exploding soul had spawned is thriving.

Although it isn't explained in the strip, Jacob is using a much more benevolent spell to speak Orcish, since Adrak's Callanish is a little broken.

That's all from me for now.

An echo of old words... January 7, 2013 Posted by Mookie
Jacob's words today echo his ominous statement just before The March Across Maltak began. But the Deegan family's necromancer has undergone some drastic changes since then. Will things be as ominous this time around?

In other relatively light news:

- I know I'm late to the party on this, but RIITIRR by Enslaved is an incredible album. I cannot stop listening to it. Axioma Ethica Odini, their previous album, was amazing and I didn't think it could be topped. I was wrong. Do yourself a favor and check this out.

- At the end of 2012, my wife and I both had very long hair. I shaved my head and Alyssa chopped off most of her hair in 2013. Now our heads are cold and we have to invest in hats. Perhaps we should have done this in the summer.

- Garth keeps sending me amazing work for our new webcomic project. Can't wait to debut this stuff at KATSUCON.

That's all from me for now.

Cutting the cord. January 4, 2013 Posted by Mookie
The last time someone (or some-demon, in this case) tried to cut the Infernomancer's arm-harpoon, it didn't end well for anyone.

(All the slaughtered demons were based on old co-workers of mine, who had been asking me to put them in my comic. So I did, and I promptly them killed off, thus beginning the tradition of killing characters with real-life counterparts.)

Quilt is the first to successfully sever the Infernomancer's hand. Fitting revenge, considering what he did to Bumper. Now if only he seemed to care that he was just maimed. Then again, he's come back from worse.

A shortened week of comics to start 2013, but we'll have a full batch of updates next week as Jacob gets a second chance to take on Rilian's necromancy.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on, and have a nice weekend!
On 2013 resolutions... January 2, 2013 Posted by Mookie
For those of you interested in my everyday life, here are some of the resolutions I've made for 2013:

- Get myself in shape. I'm getting older and I need to properly maintain what I've got.
- Take more photographs. My deviantArt gallery has been somewhat neglected and I mean to fix that.
- Find a spot to do more stargazing. I was a hungry "astronomer" in 2011 but slacked off quite a bit in 2012. I need to put my eyes back on the stars.
- Keep up answering emails, but get better at replying to messages on Facebook and Twitter.

And finally, here's a little "art project" I'm doing. I shaved my head and all my facial hair when 2013 hit. Now I'm going to let it all grow back, taking a photo of myself once-a-day for the whole year. The only things I'll be shaving are my neck (cuz nobody likes a neck-beard) and my moustache (cuz my wife hates kissing a moustache). Some may say I'll be growing an amish beard. Me? I'll be calling it my Uncle Iroh beard.
(If you don't know who Uncle Iroh is, go watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. You'll thank me.)
(If you don't like Uncle Iroh, then I don't know what to say to you.)
(If you didn't cry like a baby when Uncle Iroh sang "Leaves From The Vine," then you may not have a soul.)

That's all from me for now.
Rock on and geek out.
Will '13 be a lucky number for our heroes? January 1, 2013 Posted by Mookie
And we're back!

This is it. The final months of Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire are upon us. In case you missed the announcement back in May, the comic will come to an end on or before May of this year. It's been ten amazing years, and I'm ready to give these characters, and all of you wonderful readers, a proper ending. I hope you like what you see as the big finale looms ever closer.

But there's still lots of comics to go!

Speaking of which, remember that Miranda stored her "excess power" in magic items. She sure looks sad about having to access them, though.

My 2013 Convention Schedule is up! This list may change as time goes on, so be sure to keep an eye on it.

That's all from me for now.
Rock on, and happy new year!
