Christmas music is the most well-known holiday music of the season. Halloween songs can be scrounged up if you look carefully, and there are some real hidden gems to be found aside from “The Monster Mash” and “Thriller.” Thanksgiving doesn’t really have its own soundtrack, save for whatever dinner party music your familial and/or social circle enjoys.
I’m trying to change that. I’m attempting to make a Thanksgiving playlist. It is way harder than I thought it would be.
When I began this project I decided to look for songs about food. Weird Al Yankovic has a whole catalog of food-related songs, so I could have filled up much of this playlist with his material alone. I enjoy variety in my mixes, however, and challenged myself further by allowing no artist to appear more than once. That made things exponentially harder.
I am nothing if not determined, so while my Thanksgiving playlist is meager at the moment, I remain vigilant for more songs to add. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
“I Like Food” by Descendents
“Eat It” by Weird Al Yankovic
“Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas” by Bud Powell
“Green Beans Potatoes” by DJ Suede the Remix God
“The Hunger Within” by Psychostick
“Cold Beverage” by G. Love & Special Sauce
“Peaches” by The Presidents of the United States of America
“Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s” by Wesley Willis
“Dinner Bell” by They Might Be Giants
“Everybody Eats When They Come To My House” by Cab Calloway
As folks gather ingredients for their Thanksgiving dinners so too will I be gathering more songs for my Thanksgiving playlist.
