Here in the U.S. we had our midterm elections this week, where we elect some new lawmakers in the middle of the president’s term. It’s usually seen as a “referendum” of how the president is doing, and given my view of our president (more on that down below) I was hoping the country would soundly say “go to hell.”
After the results rolled in today, it was more like an all-caps “FUCK YOU,” and I couldn’t be happier.
I’ve never seen anything like it in my lifetime. States that were Republican strongholds flipped, infuriating incumbents whom we’ve had to endure for years were finally ousted, and a proverbial “blue wave” became a reality. Most elections in my lifetime have been close, and this was my first time witnessing a landslide. It was glorious.
If I haven’t been around to read my opinion of the president, it’s usually a long profanity-ridden all-caps rant about how much I loathe him with every inch of my soul. I did not think I was capable of such complete hatred of a human being until I’ve been forced to look and listen to him for the better part of the last ten years.
I was elated to find most of the country was joining me in a “FUCK YOU” to this monster, his corrupt cronies, his subhuman ICE thugs who’ve kidnapped and murdered without consequence, and the way he ruins everything he touches.
But the fight isn’t over. He’s still in office for two more years. The establishment Democratic leadership has proven inept and spineless since he retook office, and I’m not thrilled with the prospect of Schumer and Jeffries at the helm. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the new Dems will replace those milquetoast centrists to put some of these newly elected fighters in leadership roles, and you can bet your ass I’m going to pester my reps to do so.
It’s cautious and tempered with past disappointments, but given this was such a remarkable rebuke to the past two years, I’m finally feeling hopeful again.
