I feel like most of you who come around here know my politics and ideologies well enough, but in case there’s any doubts as to whether they’ve changed in the wake of the political climate here in the U.S., I figure the start of Pride month is a good place to reiterate them.
First and foremost, Happy Pride to everyone who identifies as queer. Wherever you are in the rainbow, you are valid and important and the world is better for you living your truest self.
I myself am not queer but have been privileged to be allowed into many queer spaces, such as social circles and performance spaces. I recognize what a show of trust that is, given the treatment many queer folks have faced at the hands of straight people (as exemplified by the very recent news of actor Jonathan Joss being murdered). I’ve had close friends and family members who have transitioned, alongside innumerable readers who have found solace in the queer characters I’ve put into my work.
I do not take for granted the love and trust that’s been shown to me by my queer friends and family and readers, and I hope to continue to be counted as an ally.
I hope every legislator introducing anti-gay / anti-trans / discriminatory bills gets hit with a brick. I hope every corporation that pandered to Pride only to pull their support gets ruined. I hope that formerly-beloved wizard author withers away into irrelevance.
I hope those who hate out of ignorance are given the opportunity to be educated. If they see the error of their bigotry, I hope those they wronged can find the grace to forgive and welcome them.
Happy Pride!
